A page of notes taken from one of Stuart Sutcliffe's art school notebooks, the page completed in Sutcliffe's hand in black ink, the first half of the page with Sutcliffe's thoughts on creativity....When creating in my own perceptual, I construct from my own feeling [underline] as well as his [scored out] my own visual, tactile, or auditory sense-date....Therefore my art is not symbolic of human feelings...., the page divided by a "shopping list" in Sutcliffe's hand Nibs. large. medium. small, the second half of the page a list of the months of the year followed by the seasons, the other side of the page with a list of ten artists including Corneille, De Stael, Birolli, Jackson Pollock and De Kooning -- 7x4¼in. (18x11cm.); and another page from a sketchbook completed either side by Sutcliffe in black ink and graphite with studies of a female form in various poses -- 10¼x7½in. (26x19cm.); accompanied by a black and white portrait photograph of Sutcliffe circa 1960 [printed later] -- 11x8½in. (28x4x21.5cm.) (3)

Stuart Sutcliffe enrolled at the Liverpool College of Art in 1956 before going to Hamburg with The Beatles as the bassist in 1960. His love of art eventually overtook his love of music, and he left the group to enrol at the State High School of Art Instruction in Hamburg. Sutcliffe died of a brain haemorrhage on 10th April, 1962.
