The armchair with square back and sides decorated with woven fret, above a caned seat, the seatrail with bundled bamboo and further fret, on bundled bamboo legs joined by a similar H-stretcher; the stool of canted circular form with woven top and fret frieze on bundled bamboo legs

Lot Essay

The earliest recorded designs for bamboo furniture in Europe are from William Chamber's Designs for Chinese Buildings and Furniture, 1757. This armchair relates to those in Brighton Pavilion in the 'Chinese' corridor, illustrated in The Royal Brighton Pavilion Guidebook, p. 8.
