The Fires of Fate, described as a 'modern morality play' was adapted from The Tragedy of the Korosko, A Desert Drama (1898) which Conan Doyle wrote at the end of 1896. He had visited Egypt at the end of 1895 and in January of the following year went with his family on a Cook's tour up the Nile. The boat moored on 16 January at a village which had been the scene of a recent attack by Dervishes and Conan Doyle wrote in his diary (Lot 66): 'If I were a Dervish general, I would undertake to carry off a Cook's excursion party with the greatest ease.'
Conan Doyle wrote, 'It is a book of sensation, but it has a philosophical basis, and for this reason is among my favourites.' The book was dedicated to James Payn for whom Conan Doyle had great respect. The dramatized version was written for Lewis Waller who played the part of Colonel Cyril Egerton.
The play opened at the Shakespeare Theatre, Liverpool, 11-12 June 1909, and transferred to the Lyric Theatre, Lonodn, 15 June - 8 October 1909.
