In his preface Conan Doyle writes, 'Father Thurston ... has written a small book against Spiritualism. As he has made very free with my own name ... it is a challenge.' Thurston had been in the form above Conan Doyle at Stonyhurst and was a dedicated opponent of Spiritualism. (13)
