GRAMOPHONE RECORD
Sir Arthur CONAN DOYLE. Typescript with autograph emendations of his talk entitled 'A Chat with Conan Doyle', the typescript headed 'Gramaphone Record' [sic], n.p., n.d., autograph emendations to approximately 22 lines, 6 pages, 4to;

two 78 rpm gramophone records by The Gramophone Co Ltd, marked 'CC. 19311-2 [and 19312-1]' (the first disc cracked); with five prints by HMV entitled 'Conan Doyle Speaking', and seven other records.
Conan Doyle's 'chat' gives answers to the 'two questions which my friends continually ask me. One is how I came to write Sherlock Holmes and the other is why I became a Spiritualist'. He describes the origins of Holmes in Dr Joseph Bell's analytic method and Edgar Allen Poe's detective stories, noting that many schools of detection have been based upon Holmes's methods and referring to Holmes's escape from the bounds of fiction: 'To many he seems to be a real person and I have had numerous letters from time to time addressed to him from all parts of the world and the most quaint requests, including what was virtually an offer of marriage. His autograph also is much in demand'. (15)
