EXTREMELY FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, uncut and in original wrappers. Although dated 1863 on the title-page, Fluabert's historical novel about Carthage was published on 24 November 1862, and was an immediate success. Baudelaire noted that the edition of 2000 sold out within 2 days, necessitating a second edition only 6 weeks later in January 1863. Its eponymous heroine, an exotic priestess in the temple of the goddess Tanit, was a popular figure in carnival celebrations in 1863. Carteret I, p.266; Dusmesnil & Demorest, p.75ff.
