HEINE, Heinrich (1800-1856). Reisebilder. Hamburg: Hoffmann und Campe, 1827.
Volume 2 (of 4) only, 8° (156 x 100mm). Half-title. Contemporary half sheep, gilt spine (a little rubbed). PRESENTATION COPY inscribed by Heine on the half-title: 'To Moritz Oppenheimer [Esq.] this book is presented by his most obedient serv[ant] H. Hein[e] Dr. Ju[ris]'.
FIRST EDITION. Following a volume of poetry, published in 1822, which was greeted with scant applause, and two plays which fared little better, Heine received enormous praise for his Reisebilder, published in four volumes between 1825 and 1831, in which he recounted his impressions of his travels admixed with pieces of poetry, short novels and shrewd philosophical observations. This volume was presented at some point during his travels in England between April and September 1827. Hirth I, 187.
