Miochin Muneakira was noted for his expertise in uchidashi [repousse] work. He is ranked along with Miochin Munesuke as one of the two finest exponents at uchidashi work in the Miochin school. Masks by this artist are extremely rare. Only seven are recorded, four in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, two in French collections and the present example.
