A KOSHI TORI DO GUSOKU [ARMOUR]
Edo Period (18th century)
A good sixty-two-plate russet iron suji bachi [ridged bowl] kabuto [helmet], the tehen [hole at the top] edged with a simple rim of iron and a single iron shinodare [spatulate plate] on the front above a deep russet iron mabisashi [peak], black lacquered six lame ko manju jikoro [neck guard] laced in dark blue sugake odoshi [spaced lacing] the hishinui [edge knots] in mauve and white, interior lacquered red, the front of the helmet with a simple fan maedate [fore crest], russet iron menpo [half mask] with gilded teeth and hair moustache and fitted with a kusari yodarekake [mail throat defence], the do [cuirass] of horizontal russet iron plates opening on both sides with gilded rivet heads, the lower two plates laced in bands of mauve and white kebiki odoshi [close lacing] as are the detachable kusazuri [tassets], on the back a sashimono [banner] of three gilded leather iris leaves, black lacquered ko sode [small shoulder guards] laced to match the do, russet iron oda gote [sleeves], iyo haidate [thigh guards] and shino suneate [shin guards] contained in a gusoku bitsu [armour box] with lacquered leather cover
