Sugata [configuration]: narrow and thick hira-zukuri [flat-sided], iori-mune [shallow peaked back], uchizori [inward curvature]

Kitae [forging pattern]: itame [wood grain] with ji-nie [hard metal granules]

Hamon [tempering pattern]: a combination of o-gunome [large pointed curves] and the style of choji [clove] with nioi, nie and sunagashi [thick lines of nie]

Boshi [tip]: ichimai [fully tempered]

Nakago [tang]: ubu [unaltered] of kurijiri [rounded heel], kiri yasurime [horizontal file marks], two mekugi-ana [hole for retaining pegs]

Fitted with two-tier gilt habaki [collar] carved and pierced with agari-fuji crests

Shirasaya [plain wood scabbard] with inscription by Sato Kanzan

Nagasa [length from tip to beginning of tang]: 9 11/16in. (24.6cm.)
Motohaba [width at start of tempered edge]: 7/8in. (2.2cm.)

Gold nashiji lacquer Aikuchi Koshirae [set of mounts with flush fitting between scabbard and hilt] comprising: nashiji lacquer saya with ho-o birds in hiramaki-e, silver fuchi-kashira, koikuchi, kurikata, kozuka, kogai, kaeri-tsuno, kojiri and bands in the center of hilt and around kurikata chiseled with butterflies and chrysanthemums on karakusa, circular gilt menuki carved with peonies, 17 5/16in.
