Jean-Henri Riesener, maître in 1768.
Possibly the greatest ébénistes of the 18th Century, Riesener brought the art of French cabinet-making to a level of near perfection. He had entered the workshop of Jean-François Oeben, of which he assumed control after Oeben's death. From 1774, the date of his appointment as ébéniste du Roi, Riesener supplied the Royal family with several spectacular items of furniture, which are now regarded as iconic examples of late 18th Century furniture. However, Riesener also supplied to a private clientèle. Decorated with the best choices of veneers, this pair of corner shelves was used to display precious objects and other porcelaines montées. Often executed with a central closed compartment, a fine Louis XV example by François-Gaspard Teune was sold at Christie's Monaco, 1 July 1995, lot 42 (FF 152,100).
