Lot Essay

The richly carved frames of these impressive consoles, with deeply voluted scrolls combined with large-scale rocailles, relates them to other Piedmontese consoles produced in the 1730's and 1740's. A series of consoles in the Palazzo Reale, Turin, with similar deeply incurving supports combined with shells, are illustrated in V. Viale ed., Mostra del Barocco Piemontese, Turin, 1963, figs. 62 and 65-7.
