The tazza with a bowl raised on a short knopped splayed stem, covered in a dark greenish-yellow glaze, the three-character Zhiben Tang mark incised around the interior of the base, 6 3/8 in. Although no clear identification of Zhiben Tang (Hall of Planting the Root) has been established, it is possible that these wares were made for the Yao family in Cixi, Zhejiang province. The Yao residence, also named Zhiben Tang, was built by Yao Mo, a Ming official of the Jiajing period, and was residence of the Yao family till the end of the Qing Dynasty. It appears that vessels with this mark are normally teadust-glazed wares. A tazza identical to the Hall example is in the Weishaupt Collection, and illustrated by Gunhild Avitable in From the Dragon's Treasure, London, 1987, no. 135, p. 96. Nother example bearing this mark but smaller in size and has a deeper rounded bowl in the Victoria and Albert Museum is illustrated by Ming Wilson in Rare Marks on Chinese Ceramics, London, 1998, no. 59, p. 138, is smaller in size and has a deeper rounded bowl.
