Martin & Co/Nazareth, PA/Made in U.S.A. and J-40BK/538170, the body in black finish, rosewood back and sides, spruce top, bound ebony fingerboard with '45' style pearl inlay, length of back 20¼ in. (51.4 cm.); and case with adhesive tape inscribed by Lee Dickson Auction #36/Black Martin J-40/#538170

This guitar was bought for collecting purposes and has been used in the studio a couple of times. (2)

Lot Essay

LD: We were looking through a Martin catalogue once at rehearsals, and we thought let's try one of these, a black one...It was a standard production model that they happened to do in black. It had the same sort of neck markings as the F7. We just bought it as an experiment, and used it in the studio on a couple of things...This was one of the ones that I brought into the studio, when I was doing that thing of bringing half a dozen in every day... at your last recording [Me And Mr. Johnson].
