Lot Essay

KK: I would love to hear how that process [the concept of the signature Martin] worked.

EC: Well, it's still going on.. I think they were very very pleased that I'd done so much to boost their image, by using Martins on stage and in Unplugged...obviously I'm a staunch admirer. So Martin offered me a chance to put together a guitar...with my wish list...and make it. It's the same kind of thing with the Strat - you get an offer like that from a company that's already kind of evolved to the point where it can go no further... All I wanted was a 000-28 or a 000-45, just with different kinds of wood....The main thing that I wanted was to get it to look like it was old, although it was brand new...The first time they submitted a prototype, I said "it's just too white, it looks like it was made today. I want one that looks like it's 50 years old".. and they did it...All we did was choose some different kinds of inlay and so on. Then they offered me some different variations, simpler models.. a 28 or a Brazilian rosewood model which has been fantastic. ...Now we're still in collaboration building a really limited edition...for friends...We've just made a black one that's been fairly successful, that works for studio or on stage as well, because it's got a built-in mike. And now I think the next one's a white one...That's what I like about them...they're keen to try anything.

KK: And they're the greatest skilled makers.

EC: Unbelievable craftsmen...

CW: Have you played this one?

EC: Yes, I play all the Martins that have been made for me...

CW: So, would this one be on recordings?

EC: Yes - definitely on Reptile.

LD: This one's a Brazilian - it's an ECB...I think this is the first one of the Brazilian rosewood series.

KK: This is not the first collaboration?

EC: This is probably the 4th or the 5th. The first one was just a simple 000.

LD: The first was the 461, then they did the stock production 000-28, then this is the 3rd or 4th when they brought the Brazilian rosewood into play with a very limited edition of 200. This is a 000-42 with Brazilian back and sides.
