Philipp Sauerland, who was long active in Breslau before establishing himself in Berlin, specialized in still lifes. The attribution of the present work to the artist was made on the basis of a signed still life of shells formerly with the Arcade Gallery, London (reproduced in Die Weltkunst, January 1954, p. 10).
