Lot Essay

Although the mark on one of the seaux is obscure, it does appear to correspond with the mark currently attributed to Freta. Freta was a flower painter at Sèvres in 1763, and the seaux has the date letter O for 1767, but according to David Peters, Decorator and Date Marks on 18th Century Vincennes and Sèvres Porcelain (London, 1997), p. 35, Freta appears in a number of overtime piecework lists in 1767 and 68.
François Binet was a flower painter at Sèvres from 1750 to 1775, and Léopold Weydinger was both a painter of flowers and patterns and a gilder at Sèvres from 1757 to 1806.
