The tripod table was formerly in the collection of Samuel Messer (d. 1991), who assembled an outstanding collection of English furniture, clocks and barometers between circa 1950 and 1991. Initially advised by R.W. Symonds (d. 1958), the great furniture historian, the Messer collection was concentrated on the Chippendale period with particular attention being paid to untouched condition, original patination and fine quality of timber, combined with good proportions, an elegant line and a balanced use of crisply carved ornament. Many of the pieces in the collection came themselves from other distinguished collections formed with Symonds's advice, including those formed by Percival Griffiths, Fred Skull and J.S. Sykes.

Robert Symonds was instrumental in building the Percival Griffiths collection, which he used to illustrate his book English Furniture from Charles II to George II in 1929. This publication brought Griffiths' collection to the forefront and demonstrated the passion which both men had for original patination and fine quality of timber.
