The rectangular rosette-carved torus cornice above a pair of shaped panelled doors panelled on the reverse, enclosing five adjustable shelves, on a stand with Vitruvian-wave frieze, shell-centred shaped apron and leaf-carved cabriole legs with paw feet, the reverse inscribed in chalk with Christie's stock number '984LT'

The shaped door panels found on this clothes-press are a design characteristic of the St John's Square, Clerkenwell, cabinet-maker Giles Grendey (1693-1780). A large clothes-press featuring his trade label is illustrated in C. Gilbert, The Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 241, fig. 433. A cabinet, with similar shaped mirrored door panels, is in the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, and illustrated ibid., p. 240, fig. 432.

The distinctive Vitruvian-scroll frieze and stylised Venus-shell badge at the centre of the foliate-carved apron are also found on a matching pier table also illustrated in A. Heal, op. cit., p. 243, fig. 26.
