Lot Essay

The use of centrally-positioned castors (which have now been replaced by corner-located castors) is a feature associated with the St Martin's Lane cabinet-maker, Thomas Chippendale. A related mahogany pedestal desk also with centrally-positioned castors was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 10 July 2003, lot 115. The latter desk followed the Dumfries House model supplied by Thomas Chippendale to William, 5th Earl of Dumfries in 1759 for £2 (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. I, p. 138 and vol. II, figs. 431 & 432).
