During the first few years of the 18th century Tompion made a small series of longcase clocks having dials with ringed winding holes and the signature within a plannished cartouche in the matted centre. For other examples see British Clockmakers' Heritage Exhibition, May-Sept, 1952, p. IX, (No.395). The Irwin Untermyer collection, 1958, fig.10 (No.344). Dawson, Drover & Parkes, Early English Clocks, 1982, col. pl.14, p.264, pl.397, p.287 - the Petworth Tompion illustrated with a later plaque covering up the original cartouche signature. Sotheby's, London, 5 June, 1997, lot 322 (No.349).
The case for the present clock, although sadly not original to the movement, has a wonderful rich nutty-brown colour.
