A George II carved oak longcase clock, mid 18th century
The hood with stepped swan neck cresting centred by a cherub mask, outset brass-capped reeded columns, with conforming brass-capped three-quarter length half columns flanking an arched trunk door, carved with a rustic male figure above a bearded head (possibly Shakespeare), the plinth carved with stylised designs and on bracket feet, the 12½in. wide cut-away brass dial with female mask and foliate spandrels to a silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with elaborate entwined leaf half hour markers and small diamond half quarter hour markers, the matted centre engraved with foliate scrolls around a subsidiary seconds ring and square date aperture, the arch with painted rolling moon and signed on a plaque above EDWARD GRATREX BIRMINGHAM, the eight day four pillar movement with anchor escapement and rack strike on bell; carving probably later -- 96¾in. (245.5cm.) high
