Lot Essay

These architectural drawings were commisioned from the local architect, Thomas Harrison of Chester by Charlotte Myddelton (d.1843) during the 1820's. They comprise schemes both for Gothicising the Cromwell Hall and its entrance, as well as creating a suite of family rooms in the East or Private Wing, which had originally been an open colonnnaded terrace walk of the 1670's. The latter were constructed in the 1820's in the Gothic taste, but were subsequently refaced by Pugin in the fullblown Antiquarian Gothic style circa 1846.
