Approx ½in. scale wooden static display model, made and presented to Jeffrey Quill in 1934, with struts, bracings and flying wires, cockpit with pilot's seat, instruments, windscreen, fourteen cylinder Jaguar IV radial engine with collector ring and exhaust pipes, two blade propeller with spinner, undercarriage and tail skid. Finished in RAF 'Silver'livery, the fin lettered 'Met Flight'. Wingspan -- 15¾in. (39.4cm.). Display base with chocks and tail trestle, glazed cover

Note: Flying Officer Jeffrey Quill served with the 'Met Flight' at RAF Duxford in 1934 and 35. The flight operated Armstrong Whitworth Siskin III A's with Jaguar IVc engines and regularly flew these aeroplanes in formidable weather conditions in order to supply the Air Ministry with crucial met. reports. When Jeffrey Quill left the Met Flight on 31 December 1935 his C.O., Sqn Ldr "Tanks" Chamberlayne, awarded him the pilot rating of 'Exceptional' and recommended him for the Air Force Cross. It was during this tour with the Met Flight that Jeffrey Quill was presented with this model of a Siskin. He subsequently earned considerable fame and distinction as the test pilot responsible for the Spitfire from its experimental prototype stage in 1936 to the end of its production life in 1948. His test-flying also included a wide range of Vickers and Supermarine types and, during the Battle of Britain he served in No. 65 (Fighter) Squadron with Spitfires and later served with the Fleet Air Arm to experience the problems and procedures associated with the combat roles of fighters and their operation from aircraft carriers.
