A Napoleonic prisoner of war bone model of a 4th rate ship, circa 1800

the hull of the model is bone planked over a wooden mold and held in place with brass pins up to the waist which is of ebony, with the gun deck in bone, and the planking above again in ebony. The decks of the model are also planked in bone. At the bow is a figurehead of a man in a stove pipe hat, and at the quarter galleries and the transom are elaborately carved galleries which are decorated in floral and ancanthus patterns and pierced with windows, balusters and other details all carved in bone. The model is detailed with anchors, pin and fife rails, capstans, deck eyes, belfry, railings, companionway, stove pipe, double wheel, cannons on carriages, and other details. The model is well rigged with three masts, standing and running rigging with turning blocks, deadeyes, stay, shrouds, ratlines, sheets, bracing lines and other rigging details. The model is displayed on an oval board covered with paper which has been decorated with geometric drawings and other indistinct patterns. The model is mounted in a glass and mahogany framed case.
