Lot Essay

Stephen Scheding wrote the first biographical essay on Carse, published in Art and Australia, September, 1979. His rediscovery of Carse is referred to in his book, A Small Unsigned Painting. It is known that Carse exhibited twice in the United States. Firstly in 1876 at the Intercolonial Exhibition, Philadelphia and again in 1893 at the World's Exposition held in Chicago. The American customs sticker found on the reverse of this painting makes it likely that it may have been in one of these exhibitions. Stylistically this is most likely to have been that in Chicago.
