Lot Essay

Zsigmond Kisfaludy Strobl (d. 1975) was one of 20th century Hungary's most celebrated sculptors, perhaps best remembered for his monumental and symbolic statue of Liberty (1947) overlooking the Danube on Gellert Hill, Budapest. His original marble version of The Birth of Venus, the present work, was executed in 1918 and is now in Santa Barbara, California. The first bronze version dates from a decade later, when the sculptor presented a life-size cast by the Vignali foundry to the city of Budapest, subsequently erected atop a fountain in the centre of Benczúr Square, Pest. A further cast was shown at the 1929 Barcelona World Fair, where it was awarded a gold medal.
