Lot Essay

William Russell (1616-1700), 5th Earl of Bedford played a minor role in politics and during the Civil War shifted his support from Parliament to the King. His son, Lord William Russell (1639-1683), was involved in the Rye House Plot against Charles II and was executed for Treason in 1683. After his sons attainder was reversed William Russell, 5th Earl was created 1st Duke of Bedford in 1694.
