Lot Essay

This form of French-fashioned and Grecian-scrolled bergere evolved from the 'curricle' or carriage-like chair discussed in Thomas Sheraton's, The Cabinet Dictionary, 1803. These chairs, with sphere-capped arms, correspond to the 'curricle' chairs supplied in 1812 by Gillows of London and Lancaster for the bedroom apartments at Tatton Park, Cheshire (N.Goodison, 'Gillows at Tatton Park', Furniture History, 1970, pl.16a). This pair of fireside chairs are likely to be those inventoried in 1839 in the Duchess's Drawing Room as; '2 Cane Back Easy Chairs & Cushions'.
One bergere is illustrated in the Library in an oil by Lady Ela Russell, dated 1896.
