With folding pierced triangular gnomon with vertical pin in the centre and a small hook on the vertical side, on an engraved four-scroll support in the centre of the chapter ring, engraved with concentric scales, the inner one for hours III-XII, I-VIII, the middle scale for thirty-two initialled points of the compass and the outer scale for degrees in four quadrants, the ring arranged to read off a folding latitude arm graduated 0-60° and raised over the glazed compass box with two folding cross-hair sights on one side of the surround for use as a simple theodolite, the silvered compass face with blued-iron needle and brass cap, eight-point wind rose, polar declination scale 30°-0-30° and circumference degree scale in four quadrants, the whole compass box and upper portion of the instrument arranged to rotate in the centre of the horizontal plate with an index to read off three surrounding scales, the inner one being an analemma watch correction scale, the middle one being a calendar scale and the outer one being a degree scale in four quadrants, each corner of the plate engraved with a rosette through which passes an adjustable screw foot
