SIGNED Butterfield AParis, EARLY 18TH CENTURY
With foliate engraved folding gnomon with bird-shaped pointer for the 40°-60° latitude scale, the horizontal plate with hour scales for 43°, 46°, 49° and 52° latitude and a glazed compass (glass cracked) with thirty-two compass points and blued-iron needle, the underside of the plate engraved with the latitudes of twenty-six continental cities and towns, foliate engraved spring for the gnomon, and a turned silver foot, contained in the original octagonal wooden case, lined in green plush and covered in black fishskin with silver hinge and sprung catch
