A GERMAN IVORY BOOK-FORM DIPTYCH COMPASS SUNDIAL
BEFORE 1645, PROBABLY BY THOMAS TUCHER
FACE Ia, upper leaf, outer face: thirty-two point windrose, numbered and labelled for sixteen points in German, with gilt-brass index, four gilt-brass spandrels and engraved and coloured foliate decoration and alternating star and circle border;
FACE Ib, upper leaf, inner face: pin gnomon dial (pin missing) with Italian and Babylonian hours within a circle surrounded by figures for the houses of the Zodiac, entitled WELSCHE VR with a stamped figure 8, further stamped QVANTIDASS DIEI, central Sunface with string gnomon and vertical hour dial VI-XII, I-VI, with coloured foliate decoration and similar, the edges of the leaf with two brass eyes and incised with lines to represent book pages;
FACE IIa, lower leaf, inner face: hour scale for string gomon 4-12, 1-8, around a circular gilt-brass pin gnomon dial for Italian hours 10-22 stamped WELSCH VR and P45G, flanked by two engraved and coloured dolphins, glazed compass box with coloured paper eight-point wind rose, unlabelled, and steel needle (replacement; glass cracked) surrounded by sixteen compass points in German, with foliate decoration to the corners and similar border, the edges of the leaf with two brass hooks and incised with lines to represent book pages;
FACE IIb, lower leaf, outer face: standard German gilt-brass lunar volvelle graduated 1-12 twice, stamped DAS IST DIE NACHT UHR, with surrounding scales for hours 1-12 (x2), Moon's age 1-29, and Julian and Gregorian epacts (incorrect), with foliate decoration, similar border, and four gilt-brass spandrels
