Vol. II was published 1865 but it is not known if he owned a copy. Thayer was a Hebrew scholar, writer and biographer of Beethoven with whom Burton corresponded, and a copy of Thayer's 'The Hebrews and the Red Sea' 1883 was in Burton's library. Roman Missal, [mid 18th-century]. 8° (195 x 126mm). 19th-century patterned calf with brass hinges, gilt edges (incomplete, lacking title and other leaves, and one clasp). Provenance: Richard Burton (inscription). PRESENTED TO BURTON BY HIS WIFE ISABEL, INSCRIBED ON FIRST BLANK 'RICHARD BURTON FROM HIS ZOO.' Isabel wrote that Richard was 'the great mesmerizer' shortly after their marriage in 1861 and he soon nicknamed her 'Zookins' for the popular name for hypnosis, 'Zoolectricity.' She may have given him this Roman Missal then as a promise had been extracted from him before they married that he not interfere with her practising the Catholic faith. Isabel continued to use this nickname and others in correspondence, especially with Georgiana, Richard's niece and biographer. The condition of this copy suggests that it travelled widely with Burton, perhaps the missing leaves used for notes or lighting fires!
