Finely carved in the form of a mallow blossom with overlapping petals spiralling outward from a small yinyang medallion in the center to the barbed and lobed rim, raised on a shallow foot ring of conforming quatrefoil outline

Lot Essay

The appealing form of the mallow flower is also found in lacquer boxes, such as a related mother-of-pearl shell-inlaid lacquer box and cover illustrated in Arts of the Scholar's Studio, Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong, 1986, no. 144, pp. 168-9.
