Each of squared gu form, one facet of the flared neck applied with a four-character inscription, jiu huang sheng, the characters of copper color in contrast to the gold color of the body

Lot Essay

The inscription may be translated, 'The sacred celebration of Jiuhuang (Jiuhuang shenhui)'. Jiuhuang is a deity whose birthday falls on the 9th day of the 9th month of the lunar calendar. This event is widely celebrated, especially in South China, and this pair of beaker vases may have been commissioned for such a festivity.

A pair of large fanggu-form vases in bronze with enamelled floral decoration is illustrated in Chinese Enamels in the Collection of the Hermitage, Moscow, 1988, no. 162 [229 230].
