A Three-Case Lacquer Sleeve Inro**
Edo period (19th century), signed Nanajunisai Toshihide (Toshihide, age 72) and with kao (cursive monogram)
The outer sleeve designed with a goose flying past a cloud-covered moon above reeds and rock baskets, the goose cast in soft metal and finished in shakudo and the moon a cut-out circle in the outer sleeve, the reeds rendered in gold takamaki-e, the clouds gold and silver togidashi with kirigane highlights, the rock basket in inlaid metal simulating bamboo, the rocks inlaid colored stones and the poles supporting the baskets covered in gold foil, all on a roiro-nuri ground; the inro of rounded rectangular section designed in black and brown takamaki-e on a kinji ground with birds in cedar trees, the interior cases decorated in gyobu-nashiji; fitted with a silver filigree basket-shaped ojime and a wood and ivory netsuke of a dragon in an abalone shell, signed Masakazu saku
