Lot Essay

Like lot 90 in this sale, the present lot belongs to the group of late fifteenth century and early 16th century blue and white pottery attributed to Tabriz (L. Golombek, R. Mason and G. Bailey: Tamerlane's Tableware, Toronto, 1996). The design of this lot is however unusual for the group, particularly the examples executed in blue and white. Close similarities can however be found, particularly in the treatment of the border, with a similarly potted green and black dish in the Keir Collection (O. Watson in B.W.Robinson (ed.): Islamic Art in Keir Collection, London, 1988, no.C43, col.pl.43). The treatment of white rosettes reserved against a dark background is very close.

For a fuller description of the type please see the entry under lot 90.
