A FARS SILVER INLAID BRASS BOWL
WEST IRAN, 14TH CENTURY
Of typical form with rounded base and long sloping shoulder rising to the triangular section rim, the shoulder engraved and inlaid with silver and black composition in the form of oval cartouches with thuluth inscriptions alternating with roundels containing paired figures or mounted horsemen, the interstices with flowerheads, a band of arcading below supporting arabesque panels, band of interlace around the rim, the interior with a stylized fish-pond, the underside with a later owner's inscription, two small repairs and one larger repair on underside, traces of silver on calligraphy and figures, partly re-engraved and inlaid, rubbed
10in. (25.5cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The inscription reads: al-'izz li-mawlana (la) , [a]l-malik al-a'zam , [a] l-sultan (ala) malik-e riqab al-umam (Glory to our Lord, The Greatest king, the Sultan, the one who curbs the nations)

The later owners' names are, on the rim: Rabi'; and under the base: Rabi', Haji Muhammad and Husayn Ghazi.
