Lot Essay

This unusual rug is woven in the Safavid vase design and is inscribed with the name Shah Sultan Husayn and the date AH 1141. While the date accords with the reign of this, the last of the Safavid monarchs, the material and technique are much more recent. It appears to be a part of a classicising tradition in the later Qajar period which saw the names of Shah 'Abbas and Shah Sultan Husayn liberally scattered across works of art, especially items of the best quality, notably in the field of metalwork.
