Lot Essay

This is a preliminary study for the picture on canvas and measuring 423 x 284 cm. painted by Bol for the Schepenzaal (Magistrates' Court) in Jacob van Campen's Town Hall - now the Royal Palace - on the Dam Square in Amsterdam. The original, stil in situ in the Royal Palace - is dated 1662 (see comparative illustration).
