Lot Essay

As yet, the artist for the present work remains unidentified, although attributions to Flemish and Dutch artists such as Jan Lievens (Leyden 1607-1674 Amsterdam), Jan Victors (Amsterdam 1619-c. 1676 East Indies), Crijn Hendriksz. Volmarijn (Rotterdam 1601-1645) and Carel van Savoyen (Antwerp c.1621-1665 Amsterdam) have been advanced as possibilities. Datable to the second quarter of the 17th Century, it is likely to have been painted in the United Provinces, but is clearly influenced by more hybrid traditions, and probably reflects the frequent exchanges of the period between Antwerp and Northern Netherlandish studios: it was customary for an artist who worked in Amsterdam to serve their apprenticeship in Antwerp.
