The present lot depicts Count Micha Tyszkiewicz (1828-1897). The Polish Count was a prominent art collector and a colorful member of the European nobility. He spent the winter season of 1861-62 in Egypt and Nubia visiting ancient monuments. In Cairo he obtained permission from the Viceroy Said Pasha permission to conduct excavations in Egypt. He remained an avid collector of objects galore throughout his life. His collection was sold after his death at auction in Paris.
