A good 19th-Century lacquered-brass surveyor's telescopic compass level,
signed Schmalcalder PATENT 82 Strand LONDON, the 6-inch long telescope with draw-tube focusing to the objective, three coloured objective shades, bubble level and regular and prismatic eyepieces, the latter to read the compass below, the telescope hinged and with vertical fine-screw adjustment at both ends, over the glazed 3½-inch compass with vernier, circumerence scale adjustment and a flat iron needle initialled at either end, raised on a staff mounting with detachable base weight -- 16.5cm. (6½in.) high
