A 19th-Century lacquered-brass theodolite,
by Troughton & Simms, LONDON, the 8½-inch long telescope with lens dust cap, rack and pinion focusing, bubble level and crosshair adjustment screws, held in a cradle over an axis between two A-frames, one incorporating the vertical half-circle with silvered-scale and vernier and adjustable via rack and pinion, the 5 3/8-inch horizontal circle with twin bubble levels, glazed compass with edgebar needle and clamp, silvered chamfered circumference scale and twin verniers, fine-screw adjustment and clamp, raised on a four-screw tripod mounting with fine-screw adjustment and clamp, with eyepiece extension tube, plumb bob and two tools, in a fitted mahogany case -- 28.9cm. (11 3/8in.) wide
