Lot Essay

The registration document ascribes the sword to Jitsua. This smith is said to have been the pupil of Sairen in Chikuzen Province, active around the end of the Kamakura and beginning of the Nambokucho Period. Old documents state that he was the teacher of Samonji. The characteristics of this sword, particularly the large bands of shirake following the flowing oitame grain, and the narrow suguha with a moist nioiguchi, are in conformance with the attribution.
