Lot Essay

Ryumon Nobuyoshi active around the Shoho era (1288-93), believed to have worked near the site of the Ryumonji temple in Yoshino, and is of the Yamato Senjuin lineage. One of his swords is a National Treasure and one an Important Cultural Property.
There are few signed works by the smith, but they do include examples of katana-mei, like this blade. This signature is one of the three types known - that on the National Treasure with the 'masa' component in the form of an 'E', another with the 'masa' of urizane [gourd type] of oval appearance, and this signature with the 'masa' in the form of a 'G'.
