Lot Essay

Although unsigned, the blade shape and characteristics are clearly of the earliest Soshu work and the attribution of the sayagaki to Yukimitsu, whose style has the greatest variation of the early smiths, is reasonable. Fittingly, this fine old blade was given a mounting with gold menuki and silver kozuka attributed to Goto Teijo, probably during the Meiji Period. This is inscribed also on the shirasaya.
