A LARGE STANDING SOAPSTONE FIGURE OF ZHANG GUOLOU
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

The face finely carved with a long beard, lips slightly parted to provide a smiling expression, wearing a scholar's cap above the pendulous ears, dressed in a flowing robe decorated with Shou characters, the garment falling in folds about the body, one hand holding a long bamboo tube, standing in a forward movement on a detachable base naturalistically carved in openwork to imitate Taihu rocks, traces of gilding and pigments remaining
