A FINE EARLY MING BLUE AND WHITE BOWL
XUANDE (1426-35)
With deep rounded sides rising from a circular, slightly tapered foot to a flaring rim, painted in deep cobalt blue in 'heaping and piling' on the exterior with a continuous lotus scroll between petals around the base, a band of 'inverted' comma-scrolls around the foot and a band of classic scroll around the rim, the interior with a central medallion containing a peony spray, below six various blooms, including chrysanthemum, peony, convovulus, camellia, hibiscus and rose around the well and a band of key pattern at the rim

Lot Essay

Compare a related example which bears a Xuande mark and decorated with different bands around the rims and the foot in the National Palace Museum, Taibei, illustrated in Catalogue of the Specail Exhibition of Selected Hsüan-te Imperial Porcelains of the Ming Dynasty, no. 134, p. 322. Compare also the unmarked example, decorated with composite flower scrolls on the exterior, sold in these Rooms, 16 November 1998, lot 61.
