Lot Essay

Through his friendship with Thomas Shotter Boys in Paris, Callow met with and came under the influence of Bonington during the early 1830s. After taking over Shotter Boys's studio in 1834, Callow began a series of sketching tours which took him to Italy in 1840 on which trip the present watercolour was executed.

Callow exhibited a watercolour of the same title at the Old Watercolour Society in 1845.
